Umar Khalid arrested news: According to Delhi Police, an FIR was registered against Umar Khalid on March 6 in a case related to the riots. They have been arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) alumnus leader Umar Khalid has been arrested in a case related to riots in north-east Delhi. The violence took place in February this year in which 53 people died. Khalid was summoned to the Lodhi Colony office of the Special Cell on Sunday for questioning. Khalid, who arrived at one o’clock in the afternoon, was arrested by evening. The police will present them before the court on Monday. He was also questioned by the police on 31 July. His phone was seized then. Delhi Police is preparing to file a charge sheet against Omar Khalid in the coming days.

Umar Khalid’s father, syed qasim rasool ilyas, said, “The Special Cell arrested my son Omar Khalid at 11 pm.” Police was questioning him from 1 pm. He has been implicated in the Delhi riot case. Shortly after Khalid’s arrest, #standWithUmarKhalid started trending on Twitter.

Along with studies, Khalid’s interest has also been in activism. He has been a student leader and has been making sharp attacks on the BJP government at the Center through several public forums.

Umar Khalid, who did his Phd from JNU, made headlines in 2016 for the first time. An event was allegedly held against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in JNU. After this, a case of sedition was filed against Khalid and then JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and 7 other students. It was also alleged that anti-India slogans were raised during the program. Khalid will be missing after Delhi Police arrested Kanhaiya. The next few days he appeared on TV channels. He was arrested on 23 February when he appeared on campus, but was later granted bail.

Umar Khalid was often in the news after the incident in JNU. On several occasions he directly targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Umar Khalid was also named in an FIR related to the violence in Bhima Koregaon in 2018. Khalid was accused of spreading hatred in two communities through his speech. In August of the same year, Umar Khalid was attacked at the Constitution Club but narrowly escaped.

Why are Khalid accused in the Delhi riots?

According to the police, they have enough evidence against Khalid. In the FIR lodged against him, sub-inspector Arvind Kumar quoted an informer as saying that Omar Khalid had conspired with the Delhi riots along with a Danish man and two others. According to the FIR, Khalid reportedly gave inflammatory speeches at two different places. The FIR states that Khalid, during the visit of US President Donald Trump to India, asked citizens to go out and block roads so that Propaganda could be spread internationally.
